Designing less

Removing a decision can be more useful than adding another control.

Make the next step obvious

A screen can be visually quiet and still ask too much of the person using it. Designing less means reducing decisions, not just reducing decoration.

Take one common task and write down every choice it requires. Which choices are necessary now? Which can wait until someone asks for them? Keep the important action visible and give secondary actions an understandable place.

Then test the result with an ordinary example, including a mistake. If the simpler version makes recovery harder, it is not simpler in practice. The goal is a useful product with fewer distractions, not minimalism for its own sake.
